Simple Easy Steps to a Peaceful Orderly Home

So what are the next steps to take, to have a reasonably orderly home?

This is what I do. These are things I learned from all the before-mentioned people, and others, and modified for what works for me as a retired person. I started doing these things while I was still working. They became essential to my sanity.

  1. After my morning quiet time, I put on my sneakers  and get to work (or go to work, or out, or for a walk. Whatever.) Shoes on your feet really help you get more done. See rationale here. https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/dressed-to-shoes/
  2. Make my bed. Looks so nice!
  3. I do a quick straighten up all over. Doesn’t take long – try it! Ahhh – the house now looks like I intended it to! Pretty!
  4. Plan dinner. Might need to take something out of freezer, or run to the store.
  5. if I’m not going out, I work on whatever project I planned the night before. Do whatever cleaning needs to be done. Try to fit in cleaning something out – a closet, a drawer, pack up giveaways and put in car, etc..
  6. Do all the dishes after dinner, clean up the kitchen completely. Clean up the stove, the counters, the sink. I leave my dishes to dry in the rack. Once you start, it gets more rewarding as you go. Ahh! The kitchen looks beautiful, as I intended it.
  7. Get clothes out for tomorrow. Really important if you work. I’m retired now, but I get clothes out that I wear to work around the house (I call it my uniform!) – clothes I can get bleach on, eg. Or if I’m going out, I pick out my clothes for that. Everything, including shoes, socks and accessories.  You’ll thank yourself in the morning.
  8. Plan my day for tomorrow.

That’s it! If you are a messy, and you start with these steps, it will truly change your life.

I love how flylady describes part of her inner self as her inner brat. It makes you realize that Yeah! I’m just being a brat if I start scrolling through social media right now.

Hope this helps! God bless.

  1. Love these nuggets of wisdom! One thing I tell myself is “Something is better than nothing!” That relieves the mental pressure of perfection, and keeps me from giving up before I even start. Messes can grow quickly and overwhelm us! I also ask the Lord to help me if I feel overwhelmed or exhausted. He always helps me! Great blog!

  2. Thanks Celeste! That is something Flylady talks about – perfectionism. I can feel overwhelmed too sometimes, and similar to your thought, my husband will say, just start somewhere! Thanks for sharing that!
